Cenote Azul & Rancho El Azul

Visited the Riviera Maya in Mexico again January 27 – February 3 2012. This time making a point of visiting a cenote (a surface connection to an underground water body). This is one of the smaller ones in the Yucatan Peninsula, but unlike anything I’ve seen in person. Especially the cave one through the Rancho El Azul up the highway about 100 metres from the main one.

Walkway up to the main cenote. A smaller one to your right filled with catfish and some other smaller fish. I sat by this cenote and built up a new tune.

Enter.

Closer view of the diving and swimming area.

On top of the diving spot. The water is crystal clear.

Surrounded by more water and dense jungle.

Underwater filming and divers.

Heading back to the concession stand and highway. Rancho El Azul next.

This is where they have the gamecocks caged up and cockfighting ring nearby. Check the ticket booth at the other main cenote entrance for fight times.

Just past all of that and the house is another cenote. This time inside of a cave. This one was my favourite out of the ones by Cenote Azul.

If you go to that area, check out Gran Cenote. It’s rated high for cave (scuba) diving.
